Member of Bübingen village council (1967-1974). Member of Saarbrücken city council (1974-1976); Member of the Bundestag (1974-1983 and 1985-1989). Member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe(PACE) and of the WEU Assembly (1981-1983 and 1985-1989). Honorary Member of PACE

Member of the European Parliament (EPP Group) 1989-2014. Chairwoman of the Delegation for relations with South-East-Europe 1994-2009, Cordinator EPP Group in Committee on Culture 1992-2009 , its Chairwoman 2009-2014
